Saturday night, we sat with friends in our back yard and enjoyed the warm Santa Ana winds coming from the desert. North of
us, just on the horizon, was the faint orange glow of a fire. It was very small & far
away. By three in the morning, we woke up to a fire line that stretched from
just due north of Alpine all the way west, as far as we could see from our
bedroom balcony. By 2PM Sunday, the fire had already damaged portions of San
Diego & was fast approaching homes on the northern part of Alpine, just west
of Viejas mountain. The word was given for voluntary evacuations & on our
way out of town we could see that the fire had jumped the freeway west of us and was
heading for Harbison Canyon. We spent the night at the Golden Acorn
Casino's parking lot & headed home the following morning to find out our
home was fine. In other areas of Alpine, the fire took a number of structures in
random fashion, but was apparently far more destructive in
neighboring Harbison Canyon and Crest. |
